Site-Level Optimizations

The architecture of a site plays an important part in how it will rank. Often enough, site designers are not aware of search engine optimization factors, and create site architectures that do not perform well in terms of search engine rankings. Several points should be considered**:

  • Accessibility to search engine spiders: in order to index the site, search engine spiders should be able to access every page. Unfortunately, spiders cannot follow any kind of links – for example they will never follow a link that involves an HTTP “POST” operation.
  • URL simplicity: search engines may not index very complex URLs that contain a session id, or too many variables (identified by a “?” or an “&”).
  • Linking structure: the text of internal links matters to search engines.
  • Site map: the site map should be relatively shallow, i.e. any page on the web site should be reachable by following a small number of links. Deep pages tend to rank lower than shallow pages.
  • Site content: generally speaking, a larger site will match more possible searches, because it will deal with more topics. If you sell flowers, writing articles about plant care, plant growing or flower preservatives will attract more search engine users. These visitors will now be aware of your site, and may become shoppers.
  • Robots.txt file: this file contains directives for what search engines spiders should or should not do. Configuring it properly is an important step in a successful search engine optimization campaign.

Successful search engine optimization campaigns optimize all of the above on-site factors. BeNoted will provide a list of recommendations to improve every site-level factor that can be improved on your site.
